“I cannot emphasize enough that truly doing whatever the fuck you want is your only key to happiness on your wedding day.
I wish I could bottle Joseph + Akai’s calm and carry it with me everywhere. We talked about it on the car ride over, and I think what really held everything together despite a chaotic (and I mean *chaotic*) engagement and planning process is that at the end of the day, they just wanted to be married None of the inconveniences mattered, because their only metric for success was having family together and exchanging vows -legally. They stayed extremely centered, establishing and honoring priorities *together* as a couple, and it paid off to the tune of the most stress-worthy yet shockingly stress-free wedding I have ever photographed.”
When it comes to celebrating love in the heart of New York City, few stories resonate quite like that of Joseph and Akai. Their elopement day was not just a wedding; it was a heartfelt journey that exemplified the essence of doing what truly matters. As a wedding photographer, capturing this day was incredibly special. It was a beautiful reminder of why I love to document love stories—because they are as unique as the couples themselves!

Joseph and Akai’s elopement was a stunning example of grace under pressure. Just two days before their wedding, they made the thoughtful decision to change the location of their ceremony to a restaurant that would keep their grandmothers dry. This level of consideration not only warmed my heart but showcased their priorities. They understood that the day was about more than just a venue; it was about family, love, and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
On the morning of the elopement, the atmosphere was serene and filled with an overwhelming sense of calm. Arriving at the gorgeous 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, I was greeted by the sight of Joseph and Akai getting ready together. The moment was pure magic. Akai was playfully scrolling through Instagram, chatting with her talented makeup artist, Tatiana Sada, while Joseph enjoyed a leisurely breakfast.
What struck me most was the ease with which they navigated the morning, radiating joy and contentment. They weren’t stressed about timelines or minor details; they were focused solely on each other. This is a vital lesson for all couples: when you prioritize your love over everything else, your wedding day becomes a beautiful celebration of that love.
As a wedding photographer, I’m passionate about encouraging couples to embrace the unexpected. Weddings can sometimes feel overwhelming with planning and expectations, but Joseph and Akai’s approach serves as a reminder that it’s all about celebrating your love. Whether it means changing venues, trimming the guest list, or rolling with the weather, the focus should always be on what makes you happy. Let this perspective transform your wedding experience!
After their preparations, we made our way to the picturesque Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The soft morning light filtering through the lush greenery set the perfect scene for their elopement photos. Armed with umbrellas, we embraced the rain and set out to explore the garden, allowing spontaneity to guide our adventure.
As we wandered through the blooming landscapes, I encouraged them to be playful and take it all in. That’s when I handed each of them a film camera, inviting them to take the “first film photo of their soon-to-be husband/wife.” This fun and interactive moment not only helped them slow down and appreciate their surroundings but also created tangible memories to cherish forever.
As the rain began to fall, we jumped into an Uber, laughter spilling into the air as we made our way to the next destination. Joseph and Akai talked animatedly about how wonderful this day was turning out. They expressed their happiness in being able to spend each moment together, doing everything exactly as they envisioned.
It’s these little moments—the laughter, the shared glances, the lighthearted conversation—that truly make a wedding day memorable. It’s about celebrating your love in a way that feels true to you, and Joseph and Akai did just that!
We finally arrived at Sundays in Brooklyn, a cozy brunch spot that encapsulated the intimate vibe they wanted for their ceremony. Surrounded by their closest family members, Akai’s dad delivered a heartfelt prayer before the couple exchanged vows. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, love, and genuine emotion, reminding everyone present of the beauty of their commitment.
After the ceremony, they poured mimosas and shared a delicious brunch that showcased the flavors of Brooklyn. Each bite was a reminder of the joy of togetherness, a beautiful metaphor for their union. As they clinked glasses and shared stories, it was evident that the true essence of their wedding day was captured in these simple yet profound moments.
Joseph and Akai’s elopement is a beautiful reminder that your wedding day should reflect your love story—no matter how it unfolds. Whether you’re considering an intimate elopement, a grand ceremony, or a cozy brunch with loved ones, the most important thing is to prioritize what truly matters: your love.
